He will find a way to lose to Onorato on the convention center hotel. It is the only political cover he has left. That is, the convention center is not going to live up to the hype, whether the hotel goes in or not. Why would it? Similarly misguided projects have been screwing up American cities for decades. Mayor Murphy should put up a perfunctory fight, then graciously accept defeat--all the while lamenting that said defeat will doom the convention center's impact.
To be honest, on some level I would enjoy watching the city build it and years later scramble to explain why it didn't work. (Again: It won't work.) But I would rather see Murphy take the out.
