We are beginning to see the kinds of unholy political alliances that government-endorsed gambling can create. By restricting licenses to a few well-connected cronies, our fearless leaders can strong arm those well-connected cronies into building all sorts of "public" boondoggles. (See proposed plans for the Penguin's new arena.)
But just who is getting strong armed? For a look at how things can really play out, look to Erie, where instead of offering to build stadiums, the casino company is actually seeking SUBSIDIES. (Discussed earlier here.) They are saying, in effect, "Let us build a casino here. In return, we will let you help us pay for the casino."
Sound like a sweet deal? No. Not really. The kind of thing that blue-collar, salt-of-the-earth folks can see right through, right? Well, uh... Take a look and see who is supporting this plan in Erie. (Registration required.) That's right. Some guy from the local steamfitters.
Big Labor plus Big Gambling. Now THAT'S an unholy alliance.
